Welcome to Rainbow Dragon Mahjong!
We are a group of Toronto-based queer-centric people looking to build local social connections through the wondrous activity of playing mahjong with each other. Players of all skill levels, including brand new, are welcome to join us at the 519 community centre every Sunday!

Our History
Rainbow Dragon began in March 2023, as a way to rebuild community and connection after pandemic lockdown and the isolation that followed. Mahjong is a game with both broad appeal to so many people across the world, and deep wells of history, culture, and strategy behind it; simple enough that you can hold a conversation, but complex enough to keep people engaged and pushing to improve their skills. Our group was formed from a diverse group of queers coming together over the mahjong table, and slowly spread through word-of-mouth.
We have had almost-weekly meetups for over three years now! That’s over 100 meetups, three anniversary parties, a dozen or so picnics in the park, one new baby, a few new pets, and a lot of lifetime friends. Now, we’re looking to expand our reach and open our doors, find ourselves a permanent home (We’re now at the 519!) and get the word out to the queer community and beyond: COME PLAY MAHJONG!!!
Our Values
Rainbow Dragon Mahjong is rooted in a diverse queer experience that stands in solidarity with racialized, disabled, colonized, and other disenfranchised people in our community and around the world, as both a part of and in support of. The land we play on is the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples, and we not only acknowledge but will actively stand in support of indigenous sovereignty and values whenever possible.
No one will ever be turned away for any reason other than the breaking of our rules. We strive to not only be a space where people come together to play mahjong, but where people can build genuine connections and networks that enrich their lives and give them structures of support and care when needed. Snacks are a major part of this. We are committed to a core value of empathy and conflict resolution; interpersonal conflicts are a part of life, and whenever possible we will seek to resolve them in a way that strengthens our bonds instead of crumbling them.
