Yes! We are a casual, all-ages, all-levels club and we will gladly teach you how to play if you’re willing to learn.

Yes! Allies are and always have been welcome. All we ask is that straight members practice their allyship actively by being extra sure to bring snacks and being the first to give up their seat if the event fills up. However, out of respect for those who are closeted or questioning, we will never volunteer you for this even if you’ve openly identified yourself as straight; please take the initiative yourself.

Our long-standing event rules are: Don’t be racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory in your language or behaviour. Don’t be aggressive, rude, or condescending to your fellow players. If you start feeling emotional, take a breath and think it through before you say something that might hurt someone. Keep discussion of drugs and alcohol, sex, and violence to a minimum. This space is intended to be accessible to young and traumatized people. As a general rule of thumb, listen to the needs of the people you are in conversation with or at a table with if they start to become uncomfortable. Talk things through carefully and empathetically.

Due to catering allowances, please bring ONLY pre-packaged snacks (such as chips, cookies, nuts, etc) from a corner or grocery store, with ingredients listed in a language you can read, or washed fresh fruit. NO food from restaraunts or cafes is allowed at all; please keep it in your bag! A variety of drinks will be provided by the 519’s catering services. If you’d like to help us pay for catering, please bring 5-10 bucks cash, donations are appreciated but optional. This money will be used to pay for our weekly default catering, and any extra will go toward ordering occassional special treats for the group!

Yes! No matter where our little club may go, we will strive to always be physically accessible to wheelchairs, strollers, walkers and so on. Additionally, one of our organizers is an experienced PSW and a lifelong disability activist; if you have any specialized physical, cognitive, or otherwise accessibility needs, please let any of our organizers know and we will work to accommodate you.

Yes! This is an all-ages space. Please do not bring drugs and alcohol, and please do not show up inebriated. Though we won’t necessarily kick you out just for having had a mimosa with lunch, you may be politely asked to leave if you show up under the influence.

In terms of general etiquette, be kind, be respectful, don’t touch other people without permission, and solve all conflicts empathetically and thoughtfully. In terms of mahjong etiquette, we tend to be a pretty etiquette-lite group; don’t touch other people’s tiles, be considerate of other people’s needs and forgiving of their mistakes.
